Watch the roadmap of the tour
Today the temperature has overcome my personal threshold. Don't know whether it was above 30 or not, but after the strong thunderstorm of the last night, today there were no clouds and no wind. And a huge shining sun just over my head. I was really boiling. I think I have drunk more or less 6 litres of water/juice during the day, and went to the toilet in the evening for the first time since the morning. Just to give you an idea.
The weather compromised a little bit the journey. That is, I avoided stopping too much, as the absence of wind really would have made my body go in self-combustion. And we don't want to put the forest on fire, do we? However the route was really pretty, Via Karelia in this area follows always small roads, just a few kilometres from the Russian borders. I tried to get as close as possible, but not having permission to enter the border zone (which is usually less than 4 km from the actual border line), I just had to stop once the yellow signs on the trees told me to. I also had the chance to swim in a lake which is half Finnish and half Russian. Exactly here. You could also see the warning yellow posts in the water.
In that area Via Karelia follows the Niskapietiläntie road, which is nowadays a museotie, that is, a museum road, as it has been used in the last three centuries as an important route in Southeast Finland. The road brought me finally to Imatra, where I felt completely destroyed. I lay in a park for an hour and also fell asleep so tired I was. That's the reason I decided to stay tonight at a camping site, mostly to have a looong shower before visiting Imatra and its streams tomorrow.
