After you've been on the road for some time you start to wonder what makes the difference between a good and a bad cycling day. I guess there are so many variables that you can never tell. Or maybe, after all, it's just the attitude and the feelings. Yesterday, for example, I went to sleep late and I drank also a couple of beers (and a glass of sparkling wine to be precise), so let's say this morning I wasn't in the best shape for cycling. However I took it easy, ate well, and left around 14.
Well, at the beginning I just felt tired, and I thought that I should have slept more. Then it started to rain, but it didn't last that long. And then, all of a sudden, headwind stopped, the sun came out, the road wasn't too hilly, and I felt like being reborn. And at the end of the day I got to Mikkeli and, after 85 km, I don't feel as tired as before departing from Pieksämäki. So, is it the weather? The wind? The flat road? Eating well? Maybe just these things all together.
Today I'm writing these thoughts not in my tent but outside, sitting on a bench in front of the beautiful cathedral of Mikkeli, where I happened to be on time to listen to a concert for organ. And many people coming to ask me how long my journey was. And blue sky, perfect temperature. Another plus to a day which wasn't supposed to be so good.
And tomorrow all the way to Lake Saimaa!
