I took the airport road just south from Sodankylä, as I left the map at the school but I recalled that yesterday I noticed it was a road that should yield somewhere. Well, at least I got to the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, where the picture of the post is taken. It's a very nice complex, with a bunch of array antennas and that big parabolic one.
After that I had the chance for the first time to take some off-road to get to the water power plant of Kurkiaska, ending up on the other side of the Kitinen river (yes, I admit, without the map I was a bit lost, but at least I knew more or less how to get back), just opposite to Porttikoski. I decided to have a look at the riverside, but as soon as I got into the woods, four reindeer approached me. Well, they well actually staring at me from five meters away. So I decided to just say "sori", and got back on my steps while they were a sort of scanning me. And this time the camera was in the bike, of course. However, it was nice to do some off-road, the bike behaved well and it was really fun. But that's definitely a no-do if I have all the bags with me.
I'll try to see whether I can keep up with some training while I'm in Sodankylä, but I guess from tomorrow I'll be busier with cars 🙂 The map below doesn't really show the actual today's route, as Google seems to fail quite well when it comes to off-roads.
